How to Maintain Your Fitness Routine During Family Vacations

Many of us love to travel. We Cottons just returned from a Thanksgiving in Mexico, and this past weekend I flew to Texas to introduce our teens to another perspective of their father’s home state.

It’s tempting to leave behind our fitness when we travel. What if I told you that we can enjoy our vacations to the fullest while still remaining consistent with our fitness and wellness?

I get it. It can be difficult to find the motivation to work out when we’re drained from travel and playing the Julie McCoy role.

After successfully making it through airline security, making time for fitness could be the last thing on anyone’s mind.

Here’s the good news. We don’t have to choose between a relaxing and fun vacation or putting our fitness goals first. When we make a reasonable plan, hold ourselves accountable, and manage our calendar, we can maximize our travel and continue to feel great in our bodies.

Of course, staying in a routine when we’re traveling can be challenging. I often hear members tell me there is no gym or the gym doesn’t have what I usually use. Yet all we really need is ourselves and some determination.

Stay Fit While Traveling 2

Here are my three foolproof tips to stay fit while traveling:

  1. Prioritize sleep: With the stress and busyness of travel, it’s even more important that we stick to our sleep hygiene. I know, I know – no one wants to sleep away their vacation – but getting 7-7.5 hours a night will help you stay motivated and energized.
  2. Get moving: You don’t need a gym or any equipment to stick to your usual movement routine. All you need is you. You can go on a walk, or, if you’re feeling a little more adventurous, use a doorframe to get some pull-ups in!
  3. Keep yourself full and fueled: When it comes to food, we don’t have to fall off the wagon when we travel. Aim for 3 meals a day that are full of protein to keep us full, satisfied, and ready to tackle any travel itinerary.

Travel can actually be an opportunity to get our sleep on track, create new movement habits, enjoy foods that make us feel good, AND connect with our friends and family. Lasting habits are born on vacation!
